Are you someone who struggles with self care? Many people in our society believe that self care is selfish, when it fact, it is the opposite!
One of the images that spirit likes to use during sessions it that of being on an airplane. Before the plane takes off, the stewardess always does the spiel about putting the oxygen mask on yourself first which would then enable you to help others. This is the perfect example of why taking care of yourself matters!
If you are someone who takes care of others & is there for others all the time, then self care is super important. You can not fill from an empty tank. When you take time to do things that bring you joy, relax you or in general make you feel great, you should do more of it, not less! When you feel good, then you help others feel good too.
Think about a time that you have been ill & instead of staying home to take care of yourself, you instead pushed through & went to work. I used to do that all the time when I worked for others. I felt obligated to be there at all times & of course who wants to use sick time when you are sick?! Because of what I do now for work, I have learned the importance of taking care of myself mentally, physically, emotionally & mentally. My job is to be here for others all day long & I can't do that if I am unwell, tired or burnt out.
Our animal companions are excellent teachers of self care. Look at how they support their bodies when ill or injured. They sleep a lot! They listen to their bodies & respond accordingly unlike us humans who push through everything!
I challenge you to look at your own self care practice. Is it enough? what could you do to improve it? How can you support others better by practicing self care?
